Wide Beach Free Camp, Ulupna VIC – Murray River Bush Camping Guide
Discover one of the Murray River’s hidden gems at Wide Beach, a stunning free camping area located on Ulupna Island near Ulupna, Victoria. This picturesque spot is part of the greater Barmah National Park, offering an authentic Australian bush camping experience right on the banks of the mighty Murray. Enclosed by a beautiful forest of iconic River Red Gums, Wide Beach provides a tranquil, sandy retreat for campers looking to escape the hustle and bustle.
As a designated free camp, Wide Beach is a popular choice for self-sufficient travellers. The spacious, open area is suitable for a range of setups, from tents and camper trailers to caravans, though access is via unsealed tracks that are best suited to 2WD vehicles in dry weather. The campsite itself is basic, embodying the spirit of bush camping. This means you must bring everything you need and, crucially, take all of your rubbish with you to preserve the pristine environment.
The main attraction is the river itself. The wide, sandy beach provides easy access to the water for swimming, kayaking, or launching a small tinny. It’s also a renowned fishing spot, with Murray Cod and Yellowbelly being common catches. Wildlife is abundant; be prepared to share the space with kangaroos, koalas high in the gums, and a vast array of birdlife. While open fires are generally permitted (check local fire bans first), you’ll need to bring your own firewood and a fire pit. Please note that as this is a national park, dogs and other pets are not permitted. With its basic facilities, reliance on self-sufficiency, and incredible natural beauty, Wide Beach is the perfect base for exploring Ulupna Island and the magnificent Murray River.
