West Bound Rest Area | Free Princes Freeway Camping Near Geelong & Great Ocean Road

For travellers heading out of Melbourne towards the spectacular Great Ocean Road and Victoria’s west coast, the West Bound Rest Area on the Princes Freeway at Waurn Ponds is a vital and highly convenient free overnight stop. This large, well-equipped rest area provides a safe and practical place for drivers of self-contained caravans and motorhomes to take a crucial break. Situated on the southern edge of Geelong, it offers a spacious and surprisingly pleasant environment for a highway stop, featuring a park-like atmosphere with grassy areas and mature trees. The layout thoughtfully separates parking for trucks and cars/caravans, which helps to minimise noise and increase comfort for overnight campers.

The key advantage of this rest area is its strategic position. It’s the perfect place to pull up for the night before embarking on your Great Ocean Road adventure, allowing for an early start to beat the crowds to Torquay and the famous surf beaches. It also serves as an excellent launchpad for exploring the attractions of Geelong and the beautiful Bellarine Peninsula. The vibrant Geelong waterfront, the renowned wineries of the Moorabool Valley, and the surf outlets of Torquay are all just a short drive away. The rest area provides the necessary amenities for a comfortable stop, including toilets and picnic shelters. While it’s primarily a transit point rather than a holiday destination, its safety, space, convenience, and proximity to major tourist routes make the West Bound Rest Area an essential resource for the smart and budget-conscious road tripper.
