Warrego River Free Camp – Wyandra QLD

The Warrego River Free Camp at Wyandra is a classic outback riverside retreat, offering travellers a spacious and tranquil spot to unwind on their journey through south-west Queensland. Situated right on the banks of the iconic Warrego River, this large, open camping area provides ample room for all types of setups, from big rigs and caravans to smaller campervans and tents. The main allure of this camp is its serene, natural setting. Visitors can choose a site with direct river views or tuck themselves away amongst the shady gum trees for more seclusion. It’s a place to escape the highway’s hum and tune into the subtle sounds of the bush: the chorus of birdlife at dawn and dusk, the gentle flow of the river, and the vast, peaceful silence of the outback night sky.

This is a primitive bush camp, meaning visitors must be completely self-sufficient. There are no toilets, showers, or water taps, so bringing everything you need and leaving no trace is essential to preserving the beauty of the site for everyone. The camp’s close proximity to the tiny township of Wyandra (just a few kilometres away) is a major convenience, allowing for a quick trip to the classic country pub for a cold beer and a hearty meal. The river itself is a focal point for recreation; it’s a popular spot for fishing, with Yellowbelly and Murray Cod being the prized catches, and it’s also ideal for kayaking or simply relaxing by the water’s edge. The abundant birdlife makes it a paradise for birdwatchers. For those seeking an authentic, peaceful, and self-reliant camping experience in the heart of the Mulga Lands, the Warrego River Free Camp is an absolute gem.
