Travelers Rest Leitchville is widely considered one of the best low-cost camping spots in Victoria. Located in the peaceful township of Leitchville, just off the Murray Valley Highway between Cohuna and Echuca, this designated stopover offers exceptional facilities for travellers on a donation basis. It is a shining example of a small town welcoming nomads with open arms, providing a comfortable, safe, and friendly environment to rest for up to 72 hours.
The campground is situated within the Leitchville Recreation Reserve precinct, offering level, grassy drive-through sites that are suitable for rigs of all sizes, from camper trailers to large motorhomes. Unlike many basic rest areas, Travelers Rest boasts amenities that rival paid caravan parks, including hot showers, flushing toilets, and a camp kitchen. The lush green setting, maintained by the local community, provides a relaxing backdrop after a long day on the road. A donation box is located on-site, and visitors are strongly encouraged to contribute to help maintain these fantastic facilities.
Convenience is key at Leitchville. The camp is located directly opposite the town’s main shopping strip. You can literally walk across the road to pick up fresh bread and the famous “cow biscuits” from the Red Gum Bakery, grab supplies at the IGA, or enjoy a meal at the local pub. For those travelling in summer, the public swimming pool is right next door, offering a perfect way to cool off.
Leitchville serves as an excellent base for exploring the Gunbower Creek and Kow Swamp areas. The region is rich in birdlife and offers great fishing opportunities. Whether you are passing through on the way to the Murray River or looking for a quiet base to explore the Gannawarra region, Travelers Rest Leitchville offers unbeatable value and hospitality.
