Step back in time and find your lakeside chill at The Groovy Pines, an unofficial but much-loved camping area on the shores of Lake Eildon. This isn’t a formal campground; it’s a throwback to a simpler era of camping, a place known for its relaxed vibe and the distinctive stand of mature pine trees that give it a unique, almost nostalgic atmosphere. Accessible to the determined adventurer via a long boat journey or a challenging 4WD track, The Groovy Pines is a reward for those who seek serenity over services and character over convenience.
The site itself is a natural clearing under a canopy of whispering pines, with the ground cushioned by years of fallen needles. This creates a wonderfully sheltered and aromatic spot to set up a classic canvas tent or swag. The area slopes down to a secluded cove, offering a private launchpad for a day of fishing, kayaking, or just floating on the tranquil waters of the Big River arm. The real charm of this place is its unpretentious, laid-back feel. It’s a spot where the days are slow, best spent with a good book, a fishing rod, and the company of friends around a crackling campfire as the sun dips below the hills.
As a primitive, informal campsite in the state forest, there are no facilities whatsoever. This is true self-sufficient camping. All visitors must bring everything they need, including drinking water and a portable toilet, and strictly adhere to a ‘leave no trace’ ethos to preserve its groovy vibe for future generations. It’s a place that feels a world away from the hustle and bustle, perfect for those who want to disconnect their devices and reconnect with nature. For a truly retro and peaceful escape, The Groovy Pines is an unbeatable Eildon destination.
