Experience classic, accessible bush camping at Taylors Camping Ground, a popular free camping area nestled in the state forest near the southern arm of Lake Eildon. Located via the unsealed Walshs Road, this spot is a favourite for those who want a convenient yet authentic natural getaway. It’s perfect for families, groups of friends, and anyone with a 4WD or high-clearance vehicle looking for a base to explore the vast recreational opportunities of the Eildon region, from fishing and boating on the lake to exploring the extensive network of forest tracks.
The campground consists of a series of large, open, and relatively flat clearings surrounded by native bushland, offering plenty of space for various setups including tents, swags, camper trailers, and off-road caravans. The relaxed atmosphere and ample room make it an excellent choice for larger groups or for families wanting space for kids to play. While the campsite is not directly on the lake’s edge, its close proximity means a boat can be launched at one of the nearby public ramps in just a few minutes, opening up a world of water sports and angling adventures. The surrounding forest is also ripe for exploration, with tracks suitable for trail biking, 4WDing, and bushwalking.
As a primitive state forest site, Taylors Camping Ground has no facilities. Campers must be entirely self-sufficient, bringing in their own drinking water, a portable toilet, and equipment for taking all rubbish home. This ‘leave no trace’ philosophy is crucial for maintaining the area’s appeal. For those seeking a no-fuss, free camping option that doesn’t require a long and difficult journey, Taylors Camping Ground provides a fantastic, convenient base for an action-packed or wonderfully relaxed Eildon escape.
