Stockmans Reward Camping Ground, Big River State Forest

Stockmans Reward Camping Ground is a large, accessible, and highly popular free camping destination located within the beautiful Big River State Forest in Victoria. Historically significant as the original site of Stockman’s Crossing on the Yarra Track to the Woods Point goldfields, today it serves as a fantastic base for modern adventurers. Situated conveniently off Big River Road, this expansive area lies near the confluence of Arnold Creek and the Big River, offering a quintessential Australian bush setting. Unlike many remote High Country camps, Stockmans Reward is easily reachable by 2WD vehicles, campervans, and even large caravans, making it an excellent choice for families, groups, and those new to forest camping. Its size and accessibility mean it can get busy, especially during peak holiday periods, but there are plenty of spots to find your own slice of tranquility among the Mountain Ash and wattle trees. The campground is well-suited for a range of outdoor activities. Anglers can try their luck casting a line into the nearby river, while the surrounding forest provides extensive trails for bushwalking, trail bike riding, and four-wheel driving. The large, open, and relatively flat ground makes it particularly suitable for large groups looking to camp together. While facilities are basic, they cover the essentials for a self-sufficient trip, with long-drop toilets and designated fireplaces available. Campers are reminded that this is a true bush camp: you must bring your own drinking water and firewood, and strictly adhere to a ‘carry-in, carry-out’ policy for all rubbish to preserve the natural environment. Being pet-friendly is a major drawcard, allowing the whole family to explore the historic and scenic landscapes of the Big River State Forest. It’s a place to unwind, disconnect from technology (as mobile service is non-existent), and enjoy the simple pleasures of camping under the stars.
