South Selwyn Camp, Wonnangatta VIC (Hike-in Only)
South Selwyn Camp is a crucial, albeit primitive, waypoint for thru-hikers tackling the formidable Australian Alps Walking Track (AAWT). Tucked away in the vast and rugged Wonnangatta region of the Alpine National Park, this is a campsite forged by necessity and appreciated for its strategic location. Accessible only on foot, it serves as a vital resting point for walkers navigating the challenging sections of the track. The camp itself is little more than a small, sheltered clearing in the dense sub-alpine forest, offering a flat space to pitch a lightweight tent and recover from a strenuous day of hiking.
The essence of South Selwyn Camp is its complete self-sufficiency. There are no man-made facilities; this is a true wilderness experience. The nearby creek is the camp’s most critical feature, providing an essential water source that must be carefully treated before use. The experience here is one of quiet solitude and deep connection with the alpine environment. It’s a place to perform the simple, rewarding rituals of the long-distance hiker: filtering water, preparing a high-energy meal on a fuel stove, and poring over maps to plan the next day’s journey. The isolation is profound, offering an escape from all modern distractions and a chance to be fully present in nature.
As a remote campsite deep within the national park, it demands respect and careful preparation. All hikers must be equipped for unpredictable and potentially severe weather, even in summer. Navigation skills, a reliable emergency communication device like a PLB, and a strict adherence to ‘leave no trace’ ethics are non-negotiable. For those undertaking the epic journey of the AAWT, South Selwyn Camp is not a destination in itself, but an indispensable sanctuary—a place to rest, recharge, and reflect amidst the raw beauty of the Victorian High Country.
