Snowy River Self Contained RV Free Camping, Orbost to Marlo, VIC

For the self-contained traveller, the scenic drive between Orbost and the coastal village of Marlo is dotted with hidden gems: a series of free riverside rest areas perfect for an overnight stop. These designated spots, often referred to simply as Snowy River Rest Areas, offer a prime opportunity to camp right on the banks of one of Australia’s most iconic rivers. This is quintessential free camping, designed for those who carry their own amenities and cherish a direct connection with nature. The sites are typically spacious, grassy clearings shaded by native trees, providing a peaceful and picturesque setting to park a caravan, motorhome, or campervan.

These rest areas are strictly for fully self-contained vehicles, as there are no facilities like toilets or showers on site. What they lack in amenities, however, they make up for in natural beauty and tranquillity. Waking up to the sound of the river flowing by and the call of native birds is a truly special experience. Most sites feature picnic tables, making for a lovely spot to enjoy a meal while taking in the serene river views. Fishing is a popular pastime, with many spots offering easy access to the riverbank to cast a line. While generators are generally not permitted to preserve the peace, and open fires are forbidden, the focus here is on low-impact camping. These sites are perfect for travellers looking for a convenient and beautiful place to rest for a night or two while exploring the incredible landscapes of East Gippsland, from the forests and farmland surrounding Orbost to the stunning estuary and beaches at Marlo.
