The Skipton Recreation Reserve is a jewel in the crown of Victorian country camping, celebrated by travellers for its exceptional facilities, beautiful setting, and incredible value. This community-run campground, located in the charming Western District town of Skipton, sets the standard for what a recreation reserve can offer. The grounds are vast, offering expansive, flat, grassy areas that are dotted with shady trees, with many sites overlooking the pretty Emu Creek. This provides a wonderfully peaceful and spacious environment, easily accommodating all types of camping setups from large motorhomes to tents, without ever feeling crowded.

What truly makes this reserve a standout destination is the quality of its amenities, which rival those of many commercial caravan parks, all for a modest donation. Adding to its convenience, the reserve offers numerous powered sites and a dedicated dump point, making it a perfect base for a multi-day stay. The campground is also famously pet-friendly, with the huge open spaces providing an ideal playground for dogs.

The location is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. The reserve offers direct access to the renowned Ballarat-Skipton Rail Trail, a 53-kilometre track that is a must-do for cyclists and walkers, featuring historic trestle bridges and beautiful scenery. Emu Creek is also a popular spot for fishing, with locals and visitors trying their luck for trout and redfin. The historic town of Skipton itself, known as the “home of the platypus,” is just a short walk away, offering a classic country pub and a well-stocked general store. For a friendly, comfortable, and perfectly positioned country getaway, the Skipton Recreation Reserve is an absolute must-visit.
