Shippens Flat Free Campground, Buckland VIC
Nestled in the heart of the magnificent Buckland Valley, Shippens Flat is one of the Victorian High Country’s most cherished free campgrounds. Offering a perfect blend of accessibility and authentic bush camping, this large, open, grassy flat on the banks of the Buckland River is a favourite destination for families, groups, and solo adventurers alike. Unlike the more remote 4WD-only sites further up the valley, Shippens Flat is generally accessible by 2WD vehicles in dry conditions, making it an ideal base for those wanting a taste of the alpine wilderness without needing a specialised off-road setup.
The campground is renowned for its spacious, unallocated sites, allowing campers to spread out and find their perfect spot beneath the shade of towering gum trees. The river itself is the main attraction, with its crystal-clear water providing a refreshing escape on hot summer days. It’s an idyllic spot for swimming, floating on a lilo, or trying your luck fishing for trout. The surrounding state forest is a playground for nature lovers, offering opportunities for bushwalking, birdwatching, and exploring the rich gold rush history of the area. As evening descends, the valley comes alive with the sounds of the Australian bush, and the remote location ensures a breathtaking display of stars on clear nights.
While still a primitive campground, Shippens Flat offers the convenience of a basic long-drop toilet, a small but significant upgrade from many other free sites in the region. However, campers must still be largely self-sufficient, bringing their own drinking water and taking all rubbish home. Its popularity means it can get busy during peak holiday periods, but its size usually ensures a peaceful experience. For an unforgettable and affordable High Country escape, Shippens Flat delivers a classic Australian camping adventure.
