Nestled on the tranquil banks of the Tarra River just a stone’s throw from the charming town of Yarram in Victoria, the Tarra River Free Camp offers a convenient and picturesque stopover for travellers exploring the stunning Gippsland region. This designated rest area is specifically suited for fully self-contained recreational vehicles (RVs), motorhomes, and caravans, providing a peaceful environment for a short-term stay. With its prime location on the South Gippsland Highway, it serves as an ideal base to uncover the area’s natural treasures, from the cool temperate rainforests of the Tarra-Bulga National Park to the windswept shores of the Ninety Mile Beach.
The campsite itself is a simple, back-to-basics affair, emphasising self-sufficiency. While facilities are minimal, the appeal lies in its simplicity and natural setting. Visitors can enjoy the gentle sounds of the river, watch for local birdlife, and appreciate the serenity of the Victorian countryside. The level, grassy surface makes for easy parking, and access is straightforward for vehicles of various sizes. As a popular spot, especially during peak travel seasons, the limited number of sites means arriving earlier in the day is advisable to secure a spot. The camp’s pet-friendly policy is a significant drawcard for those travelling with their four-legged companions, though it is essential to keep them on a leash and be considerate of other campers. The maximum 48-hour stay ensures a regular turnover, allowing more travellers to enjoy this wonderful free resource. Before settling in, visitors should ensure they are well-stocked with essentials like drinking water, food, and power, as there are no onsite provisions for these. It’s a place to disconnect and relax, all while being just minutes away from the conveniences and attractions of Yarram and its surroundings.
