Naughtons Campground – Experience the Serenity of the Ovens River

Nestled along the banks of the pristine Ovens River, Naughtons Campground in Esmond, Victoria, offers an authentic bush camping experience for those seeking an escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. Located within the Ovens River Heritage River precinct, this site is a hidden gem for nature lovers, anglers, and self-sufficient travellers. The campground is renowned for its tranquil atmosphere, where the only sounds you are likely to hear are the gentle flow of the river and the morning chorus of native birds, including kookaburras and cockatoos.

As a free camping area managed by Parks Victoria, Naughtons Campground provides a rustic setting that encourages visitors to disconnect and immerse themselves in the natural environment. The majestic River Red Gums provide ample shade during the warmer months, creating a cool retreat perfect for relaxation. The site is particularly popular during the warmer seasons when the river level allows for swimming, kayaking, and canoeing directly from the banks. For fishing enthusiasts, the Ovens River is a productive waterway known for Murray Cod and Golden Perch, making it an ideal spot to cast a line and while away the afternoon.

The campground is spacious and generally accessible, though its “bush” nature means amenities are non-existent, requiring all visitors to be completely self-sufficient. This preserves the area’s natural charm and ensures a low-impact camping culture. While the site feels remote, it is conveniently located just a short drive from the small locality of Bundalong and the larger service centre of Yarrawonga. This proximity allows campers to enjoy the solitude of the bush by night while having easy access to wineries, cafes, and essential services by day. Whether you are setting up a swag, a tent, or a caravan, Naughtons Campground offers a quintessential Australian outdoor adventure. Visitors are reminded to respect the environment by taking all rubbish with them and adhering to fire safety regulations to keep this beautiful spot pristine for future generations.
