Native Dog Flat Campground, Your Guide to Free Camping in the Victorian High Country

Nestled deep within the breathtaking scenery of the Alpine National Park, Native Dog Flat Campground offers a serene escape for adventurers seeking the raw beauty of the Victorian High Country. This spacious, free camping area is perfectly situated on the grassy banks of the Buchan River, providing a tranquil backdrop of flowing water and towering alpine ash forests. It represents a quintessential Australian bush camping experience, balancing remote wilderness with essential facilities for a comfortable stay.

The campground is a favoured destination for a diverse range of visitors. Families appreciate the open, grassy areas perfect for kids to play, while anglers are drawn to the promise of trout in the cool, clear waters of the river. For 4WD enthusiasts and explorers, Native Dog Flat serves as an excellent base camp for tackling the iconic tracks of the region, including the challenging Buchan-Jindabyne route and nearby Limestone Creek Track. The journey into the campground itself is part of the adventure, typically via well-maintained gravel roads, though conditions can vary, making a 4WD vehicle the recommended choice for safe and easy access.

While the allure of Native Dog Flat lies in its seclusion, it provides basic amenities to enhance your stay. You’ll find long-drop toilets and established fire pits, perfect for warming up on a cool mountain evening. However, campers must be self-sufficient, as there is no potable water or rubbish collection service, reinforcing a ‘leave no trace’ ethos. The lack of mobile phone coverage truly allows you to disconnect from the daily grind and reconnect with nature. Whether you’re pitching a tent, setting up a camper trailer, or parking an off-road caravan, Native Dog Flat provides a memorable and authentic gateway to exploring the magnificent Alpine National Park.
