Moreton Telegraph Station – Wenlock QLD

The Moreton Telegraph Station is a legendary outpost on the rugged journey to the tip of Cape York, offering a welcome oasis of comfort and history for adventurous travellers. Nestled on the serene banks of the Wenlock River, this iconic station is more than just a campground; it’s a crucial hub for resting, regrouping, and soaking in the unique atmosphere of the Cape. Originally part of the historic Overland Telegraph Line, Moreton has transformed into a well-equipped campground that beautifully blends its pioneering heritage with essential modern conveniences. The sprawling, grassy grounds provide ample space for a wide range of setups, from large caravans on powered sites to tents nestled in shady, unpowered spots. It stands as a testament to the region’s tough history while providing a much-needed sanctuary from the corrugated challenges of the Peninsula Developmental Road.

Unlike many remote bush camps, Moreton Telegraph Station is a paid facility, and the fee is well worth it for the amenities provided. Travellers can enjoy the simple luxuries of hot showers and flushing toilets, a true delight after days on dusty tracks. The station also features a camp kitchen, laundry facilities, and a licensed bar and bistro, serving hearty meals and cold drinks—a perfect way to end a day of exploration. The Wenlock River itself is a major attraction, famous for its incredible biodiversity and excellent barramundi fishing. Birdwatchers are in for a treat, with the surrounding area being a hotspot for rare and beautiful species. While it offers comfort, it remains a genuine bush experience. Visitors can enjoy a campfire under the stars, listen to the sounds of the wilderness, and share tales with fellow travellers. For anyone making the pilgrimage to The Tip, a stay at Moreton Telegraph Station is an unmissable and memorable part of the adventure.
