Experience the authentic heart of outback New South Wales at Mitchell Caravan Park, situated in the iconic town of Bourke. Often referred to as the gateway to the “Back O’ Bourke,” this destination is steeped in Australian folklore and pioneering history. Located just a short distance from the banks of the mighty Darling River, Mitchell Caravan Park offers a tranquil and leafy oasis for travellers looking to immerse themselves in the rugged beauty of the west. Whether you are a solo adventurer, a family on a grand outback tour, or a grey nomad seeking a comfortable base, this park provides the perfect blend of outback hospitality and modern convenience.
Bourke is a town that truly captures the imagination. It was once the major river port for the wool industry, and today, that heritage is celebrated through the spectacular Back O’ Bourke Exhibition Centre and the historic Jandra Paddleboat cruises. Staying at Mitchell Caravan Park puts you in a prime position to explore these world-class attractions. The park itself is a sanctuary of green grass and mature shade trees, providing a welcome respite from the expansive red-soil plains that define the region. It is a place where you can listen to the evening chorus of galahs and kookaburras while planning your next expedition into the surrounding national parks or along the river’s edge.
The Darling River remains the lifeblood of Bourke, and its seasonal ebbs and flows create a spectacular environment for nature lovers. From Mitchell Caravan Park, it is only a few minutes’ drive to the riverbank, where you can witness the engineering marvel of the historic North Bourke Bridge or enjoy a sunset that sets the sky on fire in shades of crimson and gold. The region is also a haven for birdwatchers, with a vast array of species congregating near the water. For those seeking a deeper connection to the land, a trip to Mount Oxley offers panoramic views of the vast horizon, or you can explore the ancient Aboriginal rock art at Gundabooka National Park, just a scenic drive to the south.
Accommodation at Mitchell Caravan Park is meticulously designed to cater to the diverse needs of modern outback travellers. The park is renowned for its spacious, level sites that provide ample room for large caravans, motorhomes, and camper trailers. Many sites are beautifully shaded, and the park’s commitment to maintaining a lush, grassy environment makes it a standout in the dry outback landscape. With exceptionally clean facilities, a friendly and knowledgeable team, and a location that provides easy access to the town’s cafes, pubs, and historic sites, Mitchell Caravan Park ensures that your stay in Bourke is both comfortable and memorable. Discover why Henry Lawson famously wrote, “if you know Bourke, you know Australia.”
