Discover one of the most dramatic and remote campsites in Victoria at McKillops Bridge Campground, situated deep within the rugged heart of the Snowy River National Park. This stunning free camping area lies on the sandy banks of the legendary Snowy River, directly beside the magnificent and historic McKillops Bridge. The journey itself is an adventure, traversing the famously steep, winding, and unsealed McKillops Road, which offers breathtaking views and demands careful driving. This is a destination for the true adventurer, a place to disconnect entirely and immerse yourself in a landscape of towering gorges, ancient forests, and the timeless flow of the river. The campground provides a spacious, open area perfect for setting up a classic bush camp under the stars.
The campground is a paradise for a range of outdoor activities. The Snowy River provides excellent opportunities for swimming in the warmer months, kayaking, canoeing, and fishing for species like Australian bass. The surrounding area is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts, with possibilities of spotting kangaroos, wallabies, goannas, and even platypus in the quieter stretches of the river. The main attraction, McKillops Bridge itself, is an engineering marvel. Standing high above the river, it provides a spectacular vantage point for photos and for appreciating the sheer scale of the gorge. While facilities are basic, the million-dollar views and profound sense of isolation are the real luxuries here. Campers must be completely self-sufficient, bringing all their own supplies, including drinking water. For those properly prepared, McKillops Bridge Campground offers an unforgettable experience in one of Australia’s most spectacular and untamed wilderness areas.
