Lightning Creek Campground

Discover one of the High Country’s most accessible and scenic riverside retreats at Lightning Creek Campground. Conveniently located directly off the iconic Omeo Highway, this spacious and free camping area is nestled on the banks of the renowned Mitta Mitta River, making it a paradise for anglers, families, and touring travellers. The campground features a large, open, grassy area dotted with shady trees, offering plenty of room for all types of setups, from simple tents to large caravans and motorhomes. Its ease of access, with bitumen right to the entrance, makes it an incredibly popular spot, especially for those looking to wet a line in the hopes of catching a prized trout.

The campground serves as a perfect base for exploring the surrounding Alpine region. It’s just a short drive from the historic township of Mitta Mitta, where you can find basic supplies and enjoy a meal at the classic country pub. The mighty Dartmouth Dam, a significant landmark and engineering marvel, is also within easy reach, offering spectacular views and its own renowned fishery. While the main attraction at Lightning Creek is undoubtedly the river—ideal for fishing, kayaking, and swimming in the warmer months—the area is also steeped in gold rush history. As a primitive bush camp, it offers basic facilities such as non-flush toilets and picnic tables. Campers must be fully self-sufficient, bringing their own drinking water and taking all their rubbish home. With its stunning location and convenience, Lightning Creek provides a classic High Country camping experience without the need for a 4WD.
