Escape to the stunning alpine environment of Mount Buffalo National Park with a stay at the picturesque Lake Catani Campground. Nestled amongst Snow Gums beside the serene waters of Lake Catani, this campground offers a unique high-country experience in Victoria. Open seasonally (typically November to April, check Parks Victoria for exact dates), it provides an incredible base for exploring the granite plateau’s diverse attractions, including breathtaking lookouts, cascading waterfalls, historic sites like the Mount Buffalo Chalet, and an extensive network of walking trails suitable for various fitness levels. Ideal for families, hikers, nature lovers, and anyone seeking cool mountain air, Lake Catani offers a refreshing retreat with convenient access to swimming, non-powered boating, and stunning natural beauty.
Lake Catani Campground is well-equipped for seasonal camping, offering designated sites set within a beautiful alpine woodland setting. Bookings are essential through Parks Victoria. The campground provides a mix of drive-in sites suitable for tents, campervans, and small camper trailers (note size restrictions may apply due to site layouts and internal roads), as well as some walk-in sites for tents only. Sites are generally unpowered and situated on compacted earth or gravel pads. Facilities include flushing toilets, hot showers (check availability/operation), dishwashing sinks, communal picnic shelters with tables and fireplaces/BBQs, and dedicated group camping areas. Potable water is usually available, but it’s wise to confirm its status, especially early or late in the season, and consider bringing a water filter as a backup. Due to the sensitive alpine environment, strict rules apply regarding campfires, pets, and generators.
The main attraction is Mount Buffalo National Park itself. Directly from the campground, you can enjoy swimming or paddling (non-powered craft only) in Lake Catani, or embark on numerous walks, from the easy Lake Catani lakeside loop to more challenging hikes like the track to The Horn for panoramic views. Explore The Gorge precinct with its stunning lookouts and views of the historic Chalet. Discover waterfalls like Rollasons Falls or Ladies Bath Falls (check track status). The unique granite tors and alpine wildflowers (in summer) provide fantastic photographic opportunities. The nearest towns for supplies, fuel, and a wider range of dining options are Porepunkah and Bright, located at the base of the mountain (approx. 45-60 minute drive). Remember that conditions can change rapidly in alpine areas, so be prepared with appropriate clothing and check weather forecasts before and during your stay.
