King Hut & Campground, Wabonga VIC
Nestled deep within the Alpine National Park on the banks of the pristine King River, King Hut & Campground is one of the Victorian High Country’s most iconic and sought-after destinations for 4WD enthusiasts. This historic site, centred around a lovingly maintained replica of the original cattleman’s hut, offers a quintessential High Country camping experience, combining rich history with stunning natural beauty. The journey itself is a major part of the adventure, requiring a capable high-clearance 4WD to navigate the tracks and river crossings that lead into this remote valley.
The campground is a large, open, and grassy flat that stretches along the river, providing ample space for groups of all sizes. Shaded by mature trees, it’s an idyllic spot to set up a base camp for a few days of exploration and relaxation. The gentle murmur of the King River provides a constant, soothing soundtrack, while the surrounding steep, forested ranges create a dramatic and immersive backdrop. During warmer months, the river offers refreshing swimming holes, and its clear waters are a popular spot for trout fishing. The hut itself, with its rustic timber construction and stone fireplace, stands as a proud tribute to the area’s mountain cattlemen heritage and is a fantastic focal point for photos and reflection.
As a remote national park campground, facilities are basic, with a drop toilet being the only amenity. Campers must be entirely self-sufficient, bringing in all their own water, food, and supplies, and packing out all rubbish. The site’s popularity means it can be busy, especially on long weekends and holidays, but its expansive nature usually allows everyone to find their own space. For those looking to escape the everyday, tackle challenging 4WD tracks like Speculation Road or the Crosscut Saw, and camp in a truly special location, King Hut is an unforgettable High Country adventure.
