JB Plain Hut Campground

Discover the quintessential Victorian High Country experience at JB Plain Hut Campground, an accessible and picturesque campsite nestled amongst majestic snow gums. Located conveniently on the Great Alpine Road between Dinner Plain and Mount Hotham, this campground serves as the perfect year-round base for exploring the breathtaking beauty of the Alpine National Park. Its ease of access makes it a favourite for families, hikers, and anyone seeking a comfortable introduction to alpine camping without the need for a 4WD vehicle. The campground itself is set in a gently sloping, open woodland, offering numerous spots to set up a tent, campervan, or caravan, with the charming JB Plain Hut providing a rustic and historical focal point.

While camping is not permitted inside the historic hut, its presence adds to the unique alpine atmosphere. The site is a hub for outdoor activities, most notably walking and hiking. It is a key access point for the Brabralung Trail and provides a starting point for numerous other tracks that weave through the stunning alpine landscape, showcasing panoramic views, unique flora, and crisp mountain air. In the warmer months, the plains are adorned with wildflowers, while autumn brings a spectacle of colour. During winter, it transforms into a winter wonderland, popular for snow play and as a budget-friendly alternative to staying in the nearby resorts for those equipped for cold-weather camping. As with most national park campgrounds, facilities are basic, requiring campers to be self-sufficient with water and supplies. The ‘leave no trace’ principle is paramount here to protect the fragile alpine environment. With its prime location and stunning scenery, JB Plain offers an unforgettable alpine adventure for all.
