Jacksons Crossing is the quintessential destination for the adventurous 4WD tourer seeking a truly remote and rewarding campsite in East Gippsland. This is not just a place to camp; it’s a challenge and an experience, defined by the iconic concrete causeway that traverses the mighty Snowy River. Located deep within state forest accessible from the Buchan and Orbost regions, the journey along Jacksons Crossing Track is strictly for high-clearance 4WD vehicles. The track itself can be steep, rocky, and slippery, but the ultimate test is the river level. The crossing is weather-dependent and can become impassable and extremely dangerous after heavy rainfall or during spring snowmelt. Success is rewarded with access to a number of informal, secluded campsites dotted along the river’s sandy and grassy banks.
This is primitive bush camping at its finest. The area offers no facilities beyond the raw beauty of its surroundings. You must be entirely self-sufficient, bringing in every necessity, including drinking water, firewood, and robust vehicle recovery gear. The philosophy here is ‘leave no trace’, meaning everything packed in must be packed out, preserving the pristine environment. Days at Jacksons Crossing are spent embracing the isolation. Popular activities include fishing for bass in the clear river waters, swimming in the shallows during warmer months, or simply sitting back to watch the ever-changing moods of the Snowy River. With zero mobile phone or internet reception, it’s a forced digital detox that allows for a deep connection with the rugged landscape. For those prepared to tackle the access tracks and the river crossing, Jacksons Crossing offers an unparalleled sense of achievement and a peaceful escape into the wild heart of Victoria.
