Discover the quiet charm of Ironbark Dam, a rustic free camping area nestled in the bushland just outside the historic town of Avoca, Victoria. Set in the foothills of the magnificent Pyrenees Ranges, this spot is a fantastic base for exploring the renowned Pyrenees wine region and the rich history of the Victorian Goldfields. The dam itself offers a tranquil, scenic backdrop for a peaceful getaway, far from the hustle and bustle.
As a basic bush camp, Ironbark Dam is best suited for self-contained travellers. You won’t find powered sites or showers here; instead, you’ll discover a genuine ‘back to nature’ experience. The area provides a small number of informal, level sites perfect for pitching a tent, setting up a camper trailer, or parking a small-to-medium-sized caravan. It’s a place where you can unwind, listen to the birds, and enjoy the simple pleasures of the Australian bush.
Activities at Ironbark Dam centre on the surrounding environment. Enjoy a bushwalk through the Pyrenees State Forest, try your luck fishing in the dam (a Victorian fishing licence is required), or simply relax by a campfire under the stars. Remember, this is a ‘Leave No Trace’ site, so you must bring your own drinking water and toilet facilities, and pack out all your rubbish. Open fires are permitted in designated pits, but always check local CFA restrictions for Total Fire Ban days and bring your own milled firewood.
Its prime location makes it an ideal staging point. The charming main street of Avoca is only a short drive away, offering access to pubs, cafes, a supermarket, and essential supplies. From here, you can easily spend your days touring the dozens of nearby cellar doors, prospecting for gold, or exploring other forest tracks. For travellers seeking a quiet, no-frills overnight stop or a weekend escape, Ironbark Dam is a true hidden gem.
