For those who believe the best camping is the simplest, Hammond Road Campground is a perfect destination. This is a classic, free, and primitive bush camp, set deep within the beautiful Otway Forest Park. It offers a genuine escape for the fully self-sufficient traveller, providing a serene and secluded environment to disconnect and immerse yourself in nature. The campground is a series of informal clearings tucked away in the forest, ensuring a quiet and private stay where the only neighbours you’re likely to have are the local kangaroos and kookaburras. The tall eucalypts and dense ferny undergrowth create a stunning backdrop for a truly authentic Australian bush experience.
The key to enjoying Hammond Road is self-reliance. There are absolutely no facilities here – no toilets, no bins, no tables, and no tap water. This makes it an exclusive spot for campers who are fully equipped with their own gear and are committed to leaving no trace, packing out everything they bring in. A major drawcard for this particular forest camp is its pet-friendly status, allowing leashed dogs to join in on the adventure, which is a rare treat in many natural areas. Evenings are often spent around a small campfire (when fire restrictions permit), enjoying the profound silence and the spectacular, clear view of the stars, far from any city lights.
While the campground feels a world away from anywhere, it’s surprisingly accessible. It serves as a fantastic base for exploring the rich network of 4WD tracks, hiking trails, and mountain bike paths that crisscross the Otways. The charming country town of Deans Marsh is a short drive away for basic supplies, and the world-famous Great Ocean Road and the bustling town of Lorne are easily reached for a day trip. For a quiet, free, and rustic forest adventure, Hammond Road Campground is an excellent choice for the well-prepared camper.
