Funny Dunny Campground, Wunjunga QLD

A truly unique and character-filled destination, the Funny Dunny Campground at Wunjunga offers a memorable bush camping experience with a quirky twist. This private camp, often booked through platforms like Hipcamp, has become a must-visit for travellers seeking something different from the standard caravan park. Its name is derived from its most famous feature: a collection of creatively designed and artistically decorated toilets scattered around the property. Each ‘funny dunny’ is a work of art, transforming a basic necessity into a fun and surprising discovery. But beyond the novelty, this camp provides a genuinely peaceful and spacious retreat, set amongst acres of natural bushland just a short drive from the secluded Wunjunga Beach.

The atmosphere here is wonderfully relaxed and unstructured. It’s an off-grid style camp where you can pick your own private spot, spread out, and enjoy the serenity of the Australian bush. The camp is exceptionally pet-friendly, with plenty of room for dogs to run and play. One of the most cherished aspects of a stay here is the opportunity to have a campfire under the vast, starry night sky, making for perfect evenings of relaxation and conversation. The hosts are renowned for their warm hospitality, ensuring a friendly and welcoming environment for all guests, from families to solo travellers.

While the camp feels remote and wonderfully isolated, it’s conveniently located for exploring the unique coastal environment of the Burdekin region. The nearby beach is a haven for fishing, crabbing, and beachcombing, offering a wild and untouched coastline to discover. The camp provides basic but well-maintained amenities, including hot showers, to complement the off-grid experience. For those looking to escape the crowds, enjoy the simple pleasures of bush camping, and appreciate a healthy dose of creativity and humour, the Funny Dunny Campground is an unforgettable stop on any North Queensland itinerary.
