Frances Recreation Reserve Camping – Low Cost Camping SA-VIC Border

Discover a convenient and affordable stopover at the Frances Recreation Reserve, situated in the small, welcoming township of Frances right on the South Australian-Victorian border. Managed by the local community and Naracoorte Lucindale Council, this reserve offers low-cost camping primarily aimed at self-contained travellers, making it an excellent base for exploring the Limestone Coast region or breaking up a long journey between Adelaide and Melbourne.

The reserve centres around the local sports oval and associated clubrooms, providing a large, open, and relatively flat grassy area suitable for camping. It’s well-suited for caravans, motorhomes, campervans, and big rigs, offering easy drive-through access and plenty of space to manoeuvre. Tent camping may also be possible, though the facilities cater best to those with their own amenities. Access is straightforward via sealed roads through the town of Frances, just off the main highway connecting Naracoorte (SA) and Kaniva (VIC).

While primarily a sports ground, the reserve provides essential basic facilities for campers. Public toilets are available, often located near the clubrooms or oval entrance. Access to potable water may be available, typically via an external tap, but travellers should confirm availability or arrive prepared. Power outlets might be limited or require specific arrangements/fees, reflecting its low-cost nature. As a community facility, maintaining the area’s cleanliness is paramount, and users are expected to leave no trace. Rubbish bins are usually provided.

Rules are generally relaxed but based on respectful use. Pets are often permitted but must be kept under control and on a leash, especially given the shared nature of the sports ground. Open fires are unlikely to be permitted due to the grassy environment and fire risks; travellers should rely on gas or electric cooking. Generator use should be restricted to considerate hours. Camping fees are typically very low, often collected via an honesty box or by a local caretaker, contributing to the upkeep of the facilities.

Frances itself is a small service town. While amenities are limited, you can usually find basic supplies, fuel, and potentially a local pub for a meal. The reserve offers a peaceful setting, ideal for an overnight rest. For more extensive services, attractions like the Naracoorte Caves World Heritage site, and wineries, the larger town of Naracoorte is only about 30 kilometres away.
