Fishermans Rest Campground – Mitchell

Fishermans Rest is a peaceful, no-frills free bush camp located on the tranquil banks of the Maranoa River, just a short drive from the outback town of Mitchell. As its name suggests, this spot is a haven for keen anglers, offering direct access to the river and the chance to catch species like Yellowbelly and Murray Cod. The campground is a large, open, and relatively flat dirt and grass area, providing plenty of space for fully self-contained vehicles to find a secluded spot amongst the trees. This is a true bush camp, meaning there are no facilities whatsoever—no toilets, no water, no bins—so campers must be completely self-sufficient and committed to leaving no trace. Its appeal lies in this simplicity, offering an escape from the more crowded rest areas and a chance to enjoy the peace and quiet of the Queensland bush. The riverside setting is beautiful and attracts a variety of birdlife, making it a lovely spot to relax, unwind, and watch the world go by. While it feels remote and quiet, it’s just a few kilometres from Mitchell, so all the town’s services, including the famous Great Artesian Spa, are easily accessible. Fishermans Rest is the perfect choice for self-reliant travellers looking for a classic, free riverside camp.
