Duck Pond Campground

Set within the unique and captivating landscape of the Winton Wetlands, Duck Pond Campground offers a spacious and accessible free camping experience just a short drive from Benalla and the Hume Highway. This campground is part of one of the largest wetland restoration projects in the Southern Hemisphere, providing a truly distinct environment characterized by vast open plains, serene waterways, and the iconic skeletons of dead trees standing sentinel in the water. The sheer scale of the area means there is ample room for all types of setups, from simple tents to the largest motorhomes and fifth-wheelers, making it a favourite for groups and those seeking space to spread out.

The campground’s location makes it a haven for nature enthusiasts. It is a premier destination for birdwatching, with over 180 species recorded in the wetlands, including majestic birds of prey and various waterbirds. The calm waters are perfect for kayaking and canoeing, allowing for peaceful exploration and a different perspective of the striking landscape. Fishing is also popular, primarily for carp. As a basic bush camp, facilities are limited to a non-flush toilet, so campers must be fully self-sufficient. This means bringing your own drinking water, firewood, and cooking supplies. A strict ‘leave no trace’ policy is in effect, requiring all visitors to take their rubbish with them. With its easy access, abundant space, and remarkable natural setting, Duck Pond Campground is an excellent choice for a convenient stopover or a longer stay to immerse yourself in the remarkable ecology of the Winton Wetlands.
