Discover the Serenity of Langi Oonah Beach on the Murray River

Nestled along the iconic bends of the Murray River, Langi Oonah Beach in Cobram East, Victoria, represents one of the region’s hidden gems for bush camping enthusiasts and nature lovers. Situated within the river red gum forests that line the Victorian and New South Wales border, this location offers a tranquil escape from the hustle of urban life. The site is characterised by its towering gum trees, sandy riverbanks, and direct access to the water, making it a prime location for those seeking an authentic Australian bush experience.Langi Oonah Beach is particularly favoured by self-sufficient campers who appreciate the “off-grid” nature of the Murray River Reserve. Unlike commercial holiday parks, this site provides a raw connection to the landscape. The area is part of the broader intricate network of river beaches and bends that define this stretch of the Murray, often referred to as “The Peaches and Cream” country due to the prolific stone fruit orchards in the nearby townships of Cobram and Barooga.Accessing the site requires navigating forest tracks that wind through the reserve. While generally accessible during dry weather, the clay-based tracks can become challenging after significant rainfall, often requiring 4WD capability. The campsite surface is predominantly compacted dirt and sand, offering firm ground for caravans, camper trailers, and tents. However, visitors must be mindful of the river red gums; camping directly under large branches is discouraged due to the risk of falling limbs, a phenomenon known locally as “widow makers.”

The location is a haven for outdoor recreation. Fishing is a primary drawcard, with the Murray Cod and Golden Perch (Yellowbelly) being the target species for many anglers casting a line from the bank or a tinny. The calm waters also invite kayaking and canoeing, allowing visitors to explore the river’s twists and turns at a leisurely pace. Birdwatchers will delight in the abundance of native birdlife, including kookaburras, cockatoos, and grazing kangaroos often seen at dusk and dawn.

As a free bush camping area, Langi Oonah Beach has no amenities. This means campers must be fully self-contained. There are no toilets, showers, or drinking water taps on-site. Visitors must bring their own chemical toilets, ample water supplies, and take all rubbish with them when they leave to preserve the pristine nature of the environment. It is a “leave no trace” camping area.

The site’s proximity to Cobram (approximately 15-20 kilometres away) ensures that while you feel secluded, essential supplies, medical services, and local attractions are never too far away. Whether you are setting up a swag for a weekend fishing trip or parking a caravan for a week of relaxation, Langi Oonah Beach offers a classic Victorian river camping experience.
