For a fantastic free camping experience nestled in the heart of Victoria’s tall timber country, Dindi Mill Camp is a beloved destination for adventurers and nature lovers. Located in the beautiful Black Range State Forest, this campground is set on a large, open, grassy flat right beside the Murrindindi River. It’s a classic Australian bush camp that offers a serene and picturesque setting, surrounded by towering eucalypts and lush ferns. The sound of the river flowing nearby provides a constant, calming soundtrack to your stay. The site marks the location of a former sawmill, and its history adds another layer of interest to this popular and scenic spot.
Dindi Mill is a haven for self-sufficient campers. The facilities are basic but well-maintained, consisting of non-flushing toilets and a number of wood-fired barbecues and communal fire pits. A key feature that makes it so popular is that, as a state forest campground, it is pet-friendly, allowing you to bring your leashed dog along to enjoy the adventure. The spacious, open area can accommodate a good number of campers, from tents and swags to off-road caravans, without feeling crowded. Evenings are often spent around a crackling campfire, enjoying the peace of the forest under a clear, starry sky.
The location is an absolute paradise for outdoor activities. The surrounding forest is a playground for 4WD enthusiasts, with a network of challenging tracks to explore. The Murrindindi River is great for a refreshing splash in summer and offers opportunities for trout fishing. It’s also an excellent base for exploring the wider region, including the charming towns of Toolangi, Marysville with its stunning Steavenson Falls, and the renowned wineries of the Yarra Valley. For a free, scenic, and activity-filled forest getaway, Dindi Mill Camp is an outstanding choice for the well-prepared camper.
