Nestled on the tranquil banks of the beautiful Macalister River in Victoria, the Cheynes Bridge Camp Site offers a quintessential Australian bush camping experience. This expansive, free camping area is a cherished spot for travellers seeking to escape the hustle and bustle and reconnect with nature without the price tag. Its spacious, grass-covered grounds provide ample room for all types of setups, from simple tents and swags to large caravans and big rigs, making it a versatile destination for solo adventurers, families, and grey nomads alike.
The primary allure of Cheynes Bridge is its serene riverside setting. The gentle flow of the Macalister River creates a peaceful soundtrack for your stay and presents a playground for outdoor activities. Anglers can be seen casting a line in the hopes of catching local fish, while the calm waters are perfect for a refreshing swim on a warm day or a leisurely paddle in a kayak or canoe. The surrounding bushland is rich with native flora and fauna, offering simple but rewarding short walks for those looking to stretch their legs and immerse themselves in the environment. It’s a place where the days are measured by the sun’s position and the evening’s entertainment is a star-filled sky, far from the light pollution of the city.
While the facilities are basic, they are practical and cater to the self-sufficient camper. The presence of a long-drop toilet is a welcome convenience. However, visitors must be prepared to be fully self-contained, bringing their own drinking water and power sources. A critical aspect of preserving the beauty of Cheynes Bridge is the strict ‘leave no trace’ policy; campers are required to take all their rubbish with them. This shared responsibility ensures the site remains pristine for the next visitors. With no mobile phone reception, it’s a genuine opportunity to disconnect from the digital world and enjoy the simplicity of a campfire and good company in a stunning natural setting.
