Charlotte Plains Station Stay – Outback Artesian Baths Experience

There are few experiences that capture the spirit of the Australian outback as perfectly as a visit to Charlotte Plains Station. This historic, family-owned sheep station near Cunnamulla offers more than just a place to camp; it provides a genuine, immersive escape into the heart of outback life, history, and nature. The crowning jewel of Charlotte Plains, and the reason so many travellers make the pilgrimage, is the incredible open-air artesian bore baths. Imagine soaking in the naturally hot, mineral-rich water flowing directly from the Great Artesian Basin, with a herd of inquisitive sheep looking on and a canopy of a million stars overhead. This is not just a bath; it’s a truly magical and therapeutic experience that washes away the dust of the road and the stresses of modern life. A row of cast iron bathtubs sits on a rustic wooden deck, offering an iconic outback photo opportunity and an unforgettable memory.

The camping at Charlotte Plains is all about embracing the space and tranquility of the outback. Guests can choose their own unpowered spot in a vast, open area near the historic woolshed and the bore head, ensuring privacy and a connection with the natural landscape. This is a true station stay, where visitors can explore the property, learn about its rich pastoral history on a guided tour, and witness the daily rhythms of station life. The abundance of wildlife is another major drawcard, with kangaroos, emus, and a spectacular array of birdlife providing constant entertainment. While it feels a world away from everything, the station provides excellent “outback-style” amenities, including hot showers and flushing toilets cleverly heated and powered by the constant flow of bore water. A stay at Charlotte Plains is a step back in time, a chance to disconnect from the digital world and reconnect with the raw, captivating beauty of the Australian bush.
