Bluewater Park Camping Rest Area | Free 48hr Camping Near Townsville QLD

Discover one of North Queensland’s most popular and well-serviced free campgrounds at Bluewater Park Camping Rest Area, conveniently located just 30 minutes north of the Townsville CBD. Situated just off the Bruce Highway, this council-run park is a shaded, grassy oasis nestled beside the picturesque Bluewater Creek. It serves as an ideal stopover for travellers exploring the coast, offering excellent facilities for a free, short-term stay.

This is a **free campground**, but **bookings are essential** and must be made online via the Townsville City Council website. Camping is limited to a **maximum stay of 48 hours** (2 nights) to allow all travellers a chance to enjoy the facility. The campground is patrolled by council rangers who will check for booking confirmations.

Access is via a sealed road (Forestry Rd) suitable for all 2WD vehicles, caravans, big rigs, and motorhomes. The camping area is large, open, and grassy with some shade, though sites themselves are not defined. Facilities are excellent for a free site and include a large toilet block (no showers), picnic tables, walking tracks, a playground for children, and an outdoor fitness equipment area.

Critically for self-contained travellers, there is an **on-site public dump point** and a **drinking water** tap available. Rubbish bins are also provided. The park is **pet-friendly** for on-leash dogs. Bluewater Creek, adjacent to the park, is a beautiful freshwater creek perfect for a swim to escape the tropical heat (always be croc-aware in NQ, though this far upstream is generally considered safe) and a popular spot for fishing.

While open fires are not permitted, gas and electric BBQs are welcome. Due to its popularity, it’s recommended to book your spot in advance, especially during the peak winter travel season. Its combination of free camping, excellent amenities, and convenient location makes it a must-stop location on any North Queensland road trip.
