Aberfeldy Bridge Campground – Free 4WD Camping in a Historic Goldfield

For those with a spirit of adventure and a love for history, the Aberfeldy Bridge Campground offers an authentic free camping experience deep within the rugged Victorian High Country. Located in the heart of the Aberfeldy Historic Area, this beautiful, remote campsite is a favourite amongst four-wheel drive enthusiasts and self-sufficient campers. Set on the lush, grassy banks of the Aberfeldy River, the campground provides a tranquil escape surrounded by steep, forest-clad mountains. The journey itself is part of the adventure, requiring a 4WD or high-clearance vehicle to navigate the winding, unsealed Aberfeldy Road, which traces the path of old gold mining routes.

The campground is spacious, with numerous dispersed sites suitable for tents, swags, and off-road camper trailers. Its rich history is palpable, with the historic Aberfeldy Bridge standing as a testament to the engineering feats of the gold rush era. The Aberfeldy River provides a picturesque backdrop, offering opportunities for a refreshing swim in summer, a spot of trout fishing, or simply relaxing by the water’s edge. Being a State Forest campground, it’s a fantastic pet-friendly destination, allowing dogs to join in the exploration. Facilities are basic, featuring non-flush toilets and established fire pits, so campers must come fully prepared. This means bringing your own drinking water, firewood, and carrying out all your rubbish to preserve the pristine environment. The lack of mobile reception ensures a true digital detox. As a gateway to the historic Walhalla area and a network of challenging 4WD tracks, Aberfeldy Bridge is a superb base for an unforgettable High Country adventure.
